Our big backyard, otherwise known as "where to go to get some"

For those of you new to my page, a couple of months ago Mom and Dad dug a pond out in the backyard. They also did a whole lot of work planting and adding to the butterfly garden.   Since then it has been non stop excitement around here.  I love to look around and smell everything!

They put some really fun swimming things in it called fish.  Sometimes the fish come to the top so I can ALMOST get them.

Mom and Dad say that our pond is where to go to get some.  Yesterday Mom and Dad found babies!  That means I now have a better chance of catching one!

Frogs like to visit often.  They are really loud and keep the whole house awake.  They start croaking around 9 and finish around 3 or 4.  Sometimes in the morning we find eggs.  Our pond is like a froggy bar.  "I'll take a shot of mosquitoes, please!"

Usually one female will come and all the males will take turns trying to impress her.  Kind of like speed dating for frogs.  Mom says that they kill mosquitoes so I guess it's OK.  I actually found one outside of the pond and tried to make friends.  Those things sure can move!

We have already had 3 sets of tadpoles born.

Bees and wasps come to the pond to drink sometimes.

We also started seeing a bunch of dragonflies!  They come in all different colors and love to buzz around my head.

We have a several butterfly gardens throughout the yard.  We usually have hummingbirds, Monarchs, Painted Ladies, Swallowtails, ladybugs, all sorts of stuff.  Mom and Dad don't use any pesticides so they try to attract as many beneficial insects as possible to get rid of the bad bugs.

Mom is working at getting the backyard certified as a Wildlife Sanctuary.  It'll be so exciting!  My favorite place to be is in the yard.  Sometimes Mom has trouble getting me to come in, but when I want in she's better open the door immediately!  I like to whine and bark really loud if she doesn't act fast enough.  Sometimes for fun I stand on the chair and bang on the window with my paws.  That gets her moving!

I hope everyone enjoyed getting a glimpse of our little wild kingdom!

Love,

Chomp

Tasty Treat Tuesday - Carrot Apple Pretzels

For today's treat Mom made some Carrot Apple Pretzels.  I love them!

To start off you will need:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 apple shredded
  • 1 carrot shredded
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp. packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/4 cup water

For frosting you will need:
  • 2 oz light cream cheese
  • water
  • food coloring if desired

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray cookie sheet with olive oil spray.  Blend flour and cornmeal in large mixing bowl.  Add apple, carrot, egg, oil, brown sugar, and water.  Mix until well blended.  Add flour if too runny.

On floured surface take pieces of dough ball and roll into long thin strips.  Shape into pretzels.  You can make these as big or small as needed depending on size of dog.  You can also roll dough out and cut with cookie cutters.  Place treats on cookie sheet.

Bake in oven for 40 minutes.  Turn off oven and leave treats for an hour to crisp.  Let treats cool completely.

For the frosting you will need to melt cream cheese in microwave.  Add water until it is desired consistency.  Add food coloring if using.  Dip pretzels.  Let dry for 4 hours on parchment paper.

Store in refrigerator.

Enjoy!

Toilet paper tastes like chicken!

So, everyone knows I am a puppy.  Puppies are known for chewing things they are not supposed to.  Up until a couple of weeks ago I had no interest in chewing anything.  Then I discovered that toys are lots of fun.  I started playing fetch and chewing on my toys.  Mom and Dad told me that I was a good boy!

I am an overachiever so I stepped it up a bit.  Now I find anything and everything left on the floor by the kids.  If there isn't anything I will look through the shoe bin and find something to keep me entertained.  I also like to go through closets in case there is something fun I missed.  I have a whole toy box but I want Mom and Dad to be super proud of my chewing abilities.

The other day we went on a road trip and the kids forgot to take my leash off.  When we got to our final destination I was wearing a small piece of red leash.  The other half was in the back seat.  How great is that?  I chewed that bad boy in about 10 minutes!  Applause please!

I moved on to my friendly natural duck.  It's made of some really strong leather and natural rope.  "Made for tough chewers" it says.  I showed it a thing or two.  I ripped Mr. Duck's head off.  For days mom was finding some weird straw stuff all over the house.  I finally brought her my headless toy to play fetch so she could inspect my handy work.

Mom and Dad were worried that I was so young when I arrived at the house that I never learned to play with toys.  I am glad I can now show them how much I enjoy my play things.

The past couple of days has been really exciting for me.  I am playing a new game where I see how fast I can chew something before anyone notices. Here are the things I chewed today:  a ballet shoe, a slipper, and some toilet paper.  3 points for Chomp!

These are the things I tried to chew but Mom took them away: a porcupine, necklace, drum stick, stamp, pen, elbow pad, and a princess crown.  7 points went to Mom.

I am hoping to get faster at my game as time goes by.  Maybe I'll even have a 100% chew rate!  A puppy can dream, right?

Have a nice night and keep on chewing!

Chomp

Froggy Fiasco

Last night Mom had some interesting things go down with one of her frogs.  It involved bracelets and Teriyaki sauce.  The things that go down in this house sometimes! Anyways, Mom wants to tell the story because I was sleeping on the couch the whole time and missed everything!

Hi everyone!  Mom here.  As many of you know we have a wide range of pets in our house.  Crabs and frogs and cats and dogs.  It's a zoo!

Last night while Chomp was sleeping I decided to put some fresh water in the frog tank.  This is something that happens nightly.  I happened to be wearing a pink and blue plastic, beaded bracelet that was a gift from the oldest girl in our house.

These are our frogs, Esme and Carlisle.  Any Twilight fans will get the names.

Apparently Esme the frog was extremely hungry.  Never mind the fact that she had 3 large crickets sitting in her belly.

Esme took a flying leap and landed on my arm wiht a bracelet in her mouth.

Tree frogs have very large mouths and you can't open them for anything.  I went running through the house to get the cricket cage.  I figured another cricket would make her open her mouth.  I pulled out a cricket and Esme opened her mouth!  Just wide enough to stick the cricket in WITH the bracelet.

So, now I have a frog, half eaten cricket, and a bracelet all attached to my wrist.  I try sparying her with a spray bottle and prying her mouth open at the same time.  Finally!  She is free.

As she goes sailing through the air causing me to panic that she will get hurt.  Luckily, there was a plate full of Teriyaki sauce to break her fall.  She went sliding down the plate like it was a Teriyaki water slide into our sink.

More panic!  Now she is covered in sauce.  I was trying to free her not marinade her!  I grab the spray bottle again and get to spraying.  Phew!  She seems OK and is perfectly happy because she got an extra cricket.

Here is Esme after the ordeal.

No, she did not get possessed  by a Teriyaki dwelling demon.  She was just stuck to the window and looked a little weird.

For all of you that do not own frogs there is a wide range of forums to visit in case you have an emergency and need answers.  I am paranoid when it comes to my pets so I get on frogforum.net  and post my story.  I wanted to make sure that Esme would be OK and would not suffer any side effects from her ordeal.  Everyone was really helpful and told me that in the future make sure to open her mouth with a rubber spatula and don't put her in sauce.

Thank you very much Frog forum!

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried....

Can you believe I missed all this last night? If I had been awake I could have had a nice tasty Teriyaki frog for snack.  Maybe next time!

Have a great day!

Love,

Chomp
